GHOST TOWN NAMESAKE: Santa Rita, New Mexico
Copper mining brought the town of Santa Rita to life in 1803. It was relatively peaceful until 1837, when the Apaches were massacred. The following battles killed nearly all of the 500 inhabitants. A peace treaty was signed and the mine reopened in 1873. The mine was converted to an open pit in 1901. The town had to move several times as the pit grew. The town was abandoned in 1967.
